The MHSOAC was directed by the CA State Legislature to develop a new suicide prevention plan for the state. The Commission began its effort in early 2018 by reviewing California’s previous strategic plan. Developed in 2008, the plan made numerous noteworthy recommendations, many of which were not fully implemented. Under the leadership of a subcommittee chaired by Commissioner Tina Wooton, the Commission engaged national and local experts; reviewed research; conducted site visits; and convened public hearings and forums across the state, where community members, policy leaders, and those with lived experience provided guidance and insight.
