This is a mixed methods study to examine the experiences among men and women with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders who are diverted to treatment. For both groups diversion led to a decrease in the risk of incarceration and increase in utilization of treatment services. Based on the interviews conducted with clinicians’ women and men face different challenges because of their positionality. The findings can support tailoring programs that understand and address Impact Justice 9 the unique risks and needs for both women and men involved in the criminal justice system.
