This groundbreaking report chronicles the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) youth in the New York juvenile justice system and subsequently provides recommendations for advocates and services providers working with LGBTQ+ youth including a call to decriminalize “survival crimes” and advocating for more placement options so that youth can be placed in appropriate environments. It uses a combination of social science research and personal interviews with juvenile justice professionals and LGBT youth to document the discrimination that LGBT youth experience in the system.
