This report describes the current status of involuntary commitment laws in the United States and illuminates several considerations for policymakers and others regarding such laws. The study evaluates stakeholders’ viewpoints regarding these laws and draws assessments of the short and long-term impacts. Additionally, it examines how these laws can protect freedoms while also promoting health and safety.
