The authors tell us that the first step in providing mental health services to incarcerated individuals is being able to identify them at the jails. Although there are standardized mechanisms to screen and identify individuals with mental health needs there is variation among jail staff leaving individuals in vulnerable positions. To ameliorate this concern the recommendation offered is to have more collaboration between jail administrators, mental health providers, and policy makers to provide referrals and support where needed.
