This paper discusses how mental health crisis services are funded in 2020 and how the burden of funding those services can be more broadly shared by Medicaid and private insurance. It will give an overview of mental health crisis service systems, show how the service systems are funded, and show how funding individual service types are funded. The NASMHPD Research Institute (NRI) developed this paper on financing by reviewing the literature and available national data, and then conducting semi-structured interviews with key state staff about the organization and structure of their state’s crisis service systems.
